Pam:

On today's podcast, I'm here with Joan and Joan is a Licensed Reiki master teacher with the international center for Reiki training and she's from and teach. In Hawaii. She's been teaching there for 27 years and I was just telling her what a dream to go to Hawaii. One of the historically significant places for Reiki. And take a class. And so if you are ever needing to review a class or take Reiki for the first time, why not do it in Hawaii? And I wanted to invite her to come and talk to us about that today. So welcome Joan.

Joan:

Thank you. It's great to be here and great to see you. It's nice to

see

Pam:

you too. Before we get too far and I just want to let you know that in the month of January, I have licensed level one and two and master classes coming up online in the Eastern time zone. Also animal ICRT Animal Reiki, training one and two and masters in February Karuna Reiki class. And in March, I will be teaching the ICRT level one and two master animal Reiki wanted to in masterclasses in the Australian time zone. If you don't already get our newsletter, there's a link to it. In the description, go ahead and click on that. We'd love to stay in touch with you. There's also a link to my schedule. If you'd like to book a session. Joan, what have you got coming up in the next little while?

Joan:

Tomorrow on starting a level one and two in person here in Hawaii. And then the following week, a master training and January also be doing online classes. I've been alternating in person and online every other month. Since I started teaching in personally earlier this year and then an an in January, there's also one and two master and Karuna in February of be teaching in person again here in Hawaii. And it's really fun because I take my students to the beach and we get to do the attunements, the placements or ignitions. By the ocean it's really magical. And Hawaii is been known as a deeply healing place for a very long time since ancient times. So it's, great to actually be here. Then in March, I've got NPR online again, and I've also been offering classes in Australia, New Zealand. And Hawaii time zones because weirdly Hawaii is only an hour later than New Zealand. Wow. The next day. So it's really mind boggling and in Australia, same thing, the time difference. Isn't that much. So it's, easy from here, but one of the benefits coming to, or eat. And Sanford classes is first of all, you're in paradise. And secondly and it's warm anytime a year. Secondly, Hawaii, as I said, has been known for. A long time, centuries and beyond as a deeply healing place and particularly the big island, which is where I live the island of Hawaii. People would come here from other islands, specifically for healing. And there are areas here that are known as healing centers. I haven't really researched it, but they must have some vortexes or something because there's very powerful energy there, but you feel it as soon as you step off the plane and you're on the island, you just go out, this is a really special place. And of course we have. The volcano, which is pretty exciting right now. I'm not near it. So there's no danger. It doesn't explode. People keep asking me, when's the volcano going to explode? When's the island gonna blow up? That's, not gonna happen. It's not like Mount St hell no people aren't no it's a very special place. And we have a saying here, lucky we live Hawaii and we really feel that. I love

Pam:

that. Joan. Thank you. Listen, before we go too far in, I'm just going to invite everyone to bring your hands together and Gassho, and just close your eyes and activate your Reiki energy. And today, as we talked to Joan in Hawaii, one of the very historically significant places. For Reiki energy, the gateway to north America, for Reiki through Mrs. Takata, we invite the energy of Reiki and the energy of Mrs. Takata to join us today. And we invite the energy of Hawaii to envelop all of us. If you have Reiki, symbols, activate them now. Just invite them to flow through all of your chakras, through your mind, your body, your soul, your spirit,

Joan:

and your emotions.

Pam:

And if you've been stressed or feeling pressure from the ways and worry is that the world just feel drop away from you now. And take this time to be about you and for you. Oh no Ms. Day. And I'm in.

Joan:

That was beautiful. Thank

Pam:

you. Thank you, John. I just really was so excited to talk with you and just bring the energy of Hawaii, that beautiful healing energy and Mrs. Takata's beautiful soul. Into us, she shows up in a lot of my Reiki sessions and so does CCD sensei and then Dr. High ashy and it's so, lovely to be able to represent them today and, talk a little bit about Hawaii and you were born there in Hawaii. So who is that? Or you've

Joan:

lived there much here, but I've lived here almost my whole life okay.

Pam:

So it's not it's, something that you're very used to, whereas it's So incredible to so many of us, but tell me a little bit about the history of Reiki and Hawaii, if you would.

Joan:

Okay. Our history here of course starts with Hawaiian kata sensei when she. Went to Japan and studied with Dr. Hayashi. It was right before world war two, and most people are aware that the big disaster and Pearl Harbor happened on December 7th. And so when she came back, it was right before that event happened, they were planning it and So on Dr. Haya, she came over to give her third level initiation. She had already moved to Honolulu when she first came back from Japan. She opened a clinic here on the big island and the building still exists. It's on the other side of the island. It's a chiropractic. Kline chiropractic. And if anyone's interested, if they're here, you could contact them and go there. If you like, and see the little shrine that he, excuse me, set up for her there. And he found her old sign under the house and hung it up. It's just, it's very sweet. Close friends was William Rand and he calls me up one day and he goes, Hey, I want to go to Mrs. She's original clinic and do a little video about her there, about her life. And he had already gotten permission. And so he came over and we went over there and did that, and it was really the first. That I knew that's where it was, where it started here and the energy there was so sweet. You could just feel her sweetness radiating throughout the building. So it was just wonderful. And I actually ended up teaching a class there. I, when we were there, I said, William, wouldn't it be cool to teach a class here at BC? Full circle. He goes, yeah, you should do that. So I did. And it was really, it was fun. And wasn't the greatest, venue because now it's on a really busy street, but still, it just seemed really appropriate in some way. But then she moved to Honolulu it's a bigger city and she had more work and by that time she was known as a very respected healer. And after Dr. was here, he went back to Japan and that's when he was, he remembered he worked for the military. Doctor in the Navy. And so he gets whisked off and interrogated and all that drama happened. And meanwhile, Mrs. was still here and working and also it was Suzy's original. God guy had gone underground because. During the war it just, wasn't safe to stand out in any way. And then afterwards, when the U S took over and wanted all peeling practitioners to be licensed and regulated, they just, they didn't want any part of that. So as far as Mrs. Takata knew she was, she had lost all contact with them. She thought that maybe they'd all been killed and that maybe she was the only Reiki master left in the world. Because they went underground in Japan, Reiki was being lost there. People started forgetting about it. The guy was now like a secret society. And so we're so grateful that Mrs. Takata had Reiki and that she was using it and promoting it and teaching it here in the west. There. Who knows what might've been essentially lost.

Pam:

I've often that, and I'm often just so thankful to Mrs. Takata.

Joan:

Yeah, absolutely. And then it's ironic that at some point practitioners from the west were going to Japan and re-introducing it there. And my understanding is that there is now a more of a Western style of Reiki that. Practice and also teach, which came from Nessa Dakota. And then there's an, and it's more practical in a lot of ways. And I think that's why she made the changes that she did and Reiki to make it practical for Westerners in Japan. It's often used and taught as more of a spiritual practice. And then the healing is. Still a part of it, but not the binary though, isn't it? Yeah. So I think it's fascinating that we have these different styles and of course they're all.

Pam:

One of the benefits I know Mrs. Takata came up with him positions. And prior to that, Reiki you relied on your intuition and what an innovation that was because suddenly even if you weren't comfortable with your intuition or you, weren't sure how reliable it was, you could still practice Reiki. And so she really did bring some wonderful. To Reiki that made it more accessible to people and I think it'd be so neat to, be there in, in Hawaii and feel all of that. What do you think is so special about Hawaii energetically? You mentioned. It does have a special energy. I know that it does people who go there and never want to leave. And you see all of the, a lot of the great spiritual practitioners, the Dorian virtues and Wayne Dyer's and all of these people, they moved to Hawaii, the William Rams and but there is really something special about Hawaii. Can you tell us a little bit about that? The energy

Joan:

Of course, it takes a certain person to feel the energy not everybody is sensitive to energy. A lot of people are just attracted to the natural beauty, but on a deeper level the Hawaiian culture is very, much connected to the. To the land, to the animals to the environment in the same way that most native cultures conduct with air land and there the world the natural world, especially. And I think that because that is more prevalent here and openly practiced. That people feel it more and it, naturally feels good. You may not know what you're feeling, but you just feel good when you're immersed in it. Whereas in other native cultures, either with native Americans or the average is Aborigines in Australia or places like that, it's not so out in the open and you have. Actually go be with those people in order to experience that culture. Also the energy of the volcanoes is very powerful. It's constant. Our, volcano is very active right now on the big island. So most active volcano in the world. And so it's constant. Re building rebirthing, giving new life, not just to the island, but to the energy of the world. And I think people feel that as well, people throng to see the volcano, because not just because it's so unique, but because the energy is really powerful and you just feel like you've been blessed when you've been there. And also Monarchia our 14,000 foot mountains. It's a very sacred place in Hawaiian culture. And that has very powerful and beautiful energy as well. And then there's YPO valley and north Kohala where king Kamehameha came from. And there's all these energy fields around the island. There's whole now, the city of refuge, which still has its origin. A very high rock wall. And that was a place where on ancient times, if someone was in trouble or being pursued, for some reason, they could come there and go in there and they were safe. It was a city of refuge, safe Haven. And then CA Ooh, the Southern end of the island has sacred areas. But it's all very part. Life it's, not hidden away. Like it is another car.

Pam:

Melanoma. And then on top of all of that, you've got the beaches and you've got the ocean, then you've got the beautiful wildlife. Anytime I'm talking to you, Joan, and we, get to talk quite a bit the, just the bird songs and, you'll look out and say, oh, there's a such and such, just walking across my yard. And I, I just think it's amazing. And when we were together in Maui the passion fruits and, just the beautiful fruit. And it's just such a lovely place. If somebody were to travel for one of your in-person classes and and join you there. What's that look like? I think you mentioned something about beaches and maybe taking people to the beach. What, how does

Joan:

that work? So the first day of class. People meet here. I teach out of my home. I have a very comfortable and pleasant screened in Lanai patios. So it's open air. And even now with COVID still going on, it, it feels very safe. The second day, and if it's master the third day, I take the class to the beach early in the morning before. Many tourists show up and we have the attendance right by the water, whether they're the placements or the ignitions and talk about magical. It's, people are very powerful experiences and also the ocean is very cleansing and deeply healing in the water here. Of course is very, clean because. The middle of the ocean there's, really no pollution in the ocean. And some students choose to go on the water, some, just stay on the beach and enjoy it. So it's very unique. It's a very unique experience. And I just love sharing this with my students. And like you said, for me, it's normal, I'm a surfer. I've been in the ocean all my life and. I don't take it for granted in any way. I'm always grateful. I always love it. And I've noticed when I've had to be in other places away from the ocean for extended periods, I don't feel as well. There's just something deeply healing about it. And. It's safe. It's clean, it's warm. You can get in at any time of year. So, that's just, that's another gift. And then we'll come back and do more of the class in the the classroom area. Yeah, that

Pam:

occurs to me that it would be so beautiful. Even if your family went with you and they were with your partner and you were doing the class and then you had a vacation together should be text deductible. I think

Joan:

so people can figure something out, but a number of students have done that they've come over with families or partners. Friends whatever. And had a little vacation before after the class and just really enjoyed the, area and the, energy

Pam:

of the island. So I just I just stepped to me when I knew that you were teaching there. I thought, wow, what a wonderful opportunity for people to be able to go connect with that history. Mrs. Takata's History on the big island of Hawaii, the special energy of Hawaii perhaps even incorporate a holiday or a vacation what would you say? The one thing that I think of though is I know there's people that would say I can't afford it. And. I find it interesting that Reiki always works. If the, if this is an intention, if this is something I could not afford my Reiki master class in England, I really did not have the money. And one of my Reiki instructors, my level three instructors said, oh, let's do Reiki and release the barriers. And I, really thought. It's not a barrier it's money. It doesn't respond to Reiki. But in fact, it did, as soon as we did the meditation, two days later, I had a check in my hands for the price of the class. So what would you say to somebody who said, oh, I'd love to go study in Hawaii, but I can't afford it because I would tell them, just set your intention. It will happen. What would you tell them?

Joan:

Pretty much the same thing. We have these. Limiting beliefs. I really wanted to do this, but I can't because of whatever, but if you really want something and you're focused on it and it's in your highest good, and you're meant to do it, the money shows up or the ability to do whatever it is, shows up but you have to really want it that much. I really wanted to do the licensing program, but it's pretty expensive. And I really didn't have the money at the time and I don't recommend this, but when I had that horrible car I got a settlement which enabled me to do the licensing program. So yeah, I keep telling the universe. Thank You But I don't need to do that again. I don't need that much drama manifesting. When that event happened, Is as horrible as it was. I knew that it happened for a reason. I just didn't know what the reason was initially. But so yeah, miracles occur all the time. We live in a realm of infinite possibility and you can just, even if you don't have Reiki, just place your intent. I really want this thing. I know it's what I'm supposed to do and the money will show up and a lot of people have credit cards that give you miles or bonuses, or I've traveled a lot the last few years. I wouldn't say much this past year, but so I have a mileage card, so I get a couple of free tickets a year just by. Buying, whatever I normally buy to England, Joan, it's amazing. You, wouldn't believe w how quickly it adds up and and then there's other ways to do it. You can as far as the class fees, I offer payment plans for, I don't want to turn away any students who are sincerely. Wanting to do the Reiki training because as as, teachers, part of our job is to bring Reiki out into the world. And it's important to work with that and, if someone really wants it, I'm willing to work with their situation and help them access the training that they want, because then they're going to go out and help others, and it keeps going.

Pam:

Something that I hadn't considered when I was originally going to England to study with our friend William Rand I was looking at the expense of it and I also didn't intend to take. So I was really looking at the cost and I, was flying home when I realized I wanted to teach and I wanted it. And our program made teaching so accessible. With the manuals through the ICR T with the, I also felt that my lineage through studying with William was so closely aligned. I really wanted people to, to Usui sensei and I really wanted people to have access to that and access to the beauty that I had just experienced. And. So I went with this intention to teach and suddenly my financial issues all worked out. And that was a side effect of teaching that had nothing to do with why I wanted to teach. But suddenly financially I was stable after that class. And I look back now and I think. Ma'am I know I didn't have the money, but it was the best investment I ever made.

Joan:

Yeah. I feel the same way ironically, so I'm from Hawaii and, but years ago I knew nothing about Reiki. Never heard of it. I wasn't doing healing work. I owned a landscaping business. My background is ornamental horticulture, and this is way back. And so William was here. Mrs. Dakota was still alive. She was here teaching she taught until 1980. Wow. And it's, I just think it's ironic that I knew nothing about it until they were gone to William was back on the mainland and she had passed and Even though I had Reiki training here. It wasn't until the mid nineties. And even that I, just. I don't believe in it and someone said, oh, you just put your hands on someone and they heal. And I just thought, no,

Pam:

I went through a healthy dose of skepticism at the beginning to,

Joan:

I think it's good. I think it's healthy. And I appreciate students who question things I don't think anyone should just accept something as William says Somebody tells you it's true, or you need to try it for yourself. And at the time I did my initial training, it was through a different school and the levels were separate. And I noticed things were different after I took the level one, even though. I was annoyed the whole weekend. I thought it was a total waste of time and, but something had shifted and that got my attention. And then I got curious about it. And then years later I studied all kinds of energy healing including matrix energetics, which is makes Reiki. Mainstream. It's pretty out there, but it works energy healing works because we live in a unified field of energy. Everything in the universe is energy. Everything is physical, things are energy and we can shift the energy fields with. Positive intent and focus on it's. I love the beauty and simplicity of Reiki because anybody can do it. I can do it. Anybody can do it. I think that

Pam:

to myself, I can

Joan:

do it anyway.

Pam:

I love that. Joan, is there anything else you'd like to mention? I know that you're going to take. To the beach for a wonderful meditation with you. Is there anything else you'd like people to know before we move into the

Joan:

meditation today? Gosh, I don't know. Did we not, we covered it all.

Pam:

Just do Reiki. She already doing Reiki,

Joan:

do Reiki, getting it out the whole time and and, this hanging behind me is actually of the big island. It's got fish ponds and there's Palm trees and flowers. And so, the energy of Hawaii is beaming out of the school.

Pam:

I can feel it. And Joan that it's my intention to come and visit you just as soon as I can. So I, my husband and I will be there and hopefully take in one of your classes when we're there too. So I just want to say thank you to you and thank you to the listeners, because I am going to leave you. We're going to leave you in Jones' meditation after this. Joan, thank you for being here today. I really appreciate it. Okay. And I want to invite everybody else to just enjoy the meditation and the beach that Joan is leaving us with.
